As a Malta passport holder, you are permitted to travel visa-free to 176 countries and territories. This data is correct as of August 2024.

In order to travel visa-free, you will need a valid passport, often with at least six months until expiry. Additionally, you may need travel insurance, as required by your destination country.

Within these countries, there is often a separate section in airports where you can submit your Visa on Arrival. You will receive your visa on arrival (VOA) after entering the country that issued the visa.

Acquiring an eVisa follows the same process as applying for a traditional visa. The main difference with an eVisa is that you don’t need to visit a visa application centre. You can submit your application online, including making any payments relating to the visa.

Once the relevant authorities approve your application, you will receive a confirmation email regarding your visa status, along with a document that you must print and bring with you when crossing the border.

You will need a valid visa to enter the 176 countries with a Malta passport.

About Malta

Contrary to popular belief, Malta is a group of 5 islands rather than one island alone. However, the main island of Malta is home to the capital of Valletta and the bulk of the archipelago’s 550,000+ population. Because of its strategic location south of Italy and north-west of Africa, Malta played an important role in the Second World War.

It was an Allied base and Malta received a George Cross award for its bravery. After WWII, there came a push for independence. Malta became part of the Commonwealth in 1964 and a republic 10 years later. In 2004, it joined the EU.

English is one of two official languages in Malta. The cuisine meanwhile is a blend of Arabic and Italian influences. In terms of visa-free access, you can travel to 175 destinations with a Malta passport.
