Malta Permanent Residence for Indian Citizens in 2024

Global mobility specialist Navdeep Singh knows all about Malta Permanent Residence for Indian citizens. In our latest interview, he discusses why Residency by Investment is becoming popular with Indian HNWIs and their families. We ask the key questions and Nav gives us illuminating answers.

1.) How popular is the Malta Permanent Residence Programme (MPRP) with Indian nationals?

“Historically, Indians looked at the USA, Canada, UK, Australia, and Dubai as our prime focus for Residency by Investment. The trend changed some five years ago, when Indians started to look at Europe more seriously.”

“As a small archipelago just south of Italy, Malta’s home to around 450,000 inhabitants. Roughly 100,000 of these are foreign workers. Estimates put the number of Indians in Malta at approximately 12,000.”

2.) Why do Indians feel at home in Malta?

“Indians enjoy a respectful life in Malta. Maltese locals consider Indians to be peaceful, serious, and enterprising. Many have invested in businesses of all sorts here.”

“The Maltese have developed a taste for all things Indian. This is particularly true when it comes to food. There is a growing number of highly-rated Indian restaurants in Malta.”

“The English language is the official mode of communication, along with the local Maltese. Close to 90% of the population born in Malta speak English fluently.”

“Unlike other European countries, there is no language exam to pass if you want to meet requirements for long-term settlement. Maltese Government offices do not request you translate documents, if they are in English.”

4.) How freer will an Indian travel with Malta residency ?

“We do enjoy travelling abroad, around Europe in particular. However, lately, most Indians face a hard time acquiring a Schengen Visa in India, or even if they’re living in the Gulf.”

“Now, we have to plan up to four months in advance. It is a bureaucratic nightmare as most European embassies issue visas with very short validity.”

“This means the whole sorry process begins again in six months. Lack of global mobility costs Indian entrepreneurs billions of dollars.”

“The MPRP offers visa-free access to the 27 countries of the Schengen Zone. Say goodbye to the European (Schengen) visa applications.”

“Just buy a flight for next-day travel without any concerns. Present your passport and the Malta PR card at any Schengen country airport and, voila, you are in.”

5.) What other benefits are there?

“Indians, particularly from Mumbai and the South, find Malta’s 300 days of sunshine with temperatures averaging between 20 and 30 degrees Centigrade appealing. Countries with harsh winters are hard for most Indians to cope with.”

“Today’s affluent Indian is truly global, with investments spread across the world. Malta accommodates on this level, as you ‘need not’ clock in certain days per year to maintain your residency.”

How to Obtain Residency by Investment in Malta

Malta Permanent Residence for Indian citizens makes sense as it provides flexibility regarding how long you want to stay in the country. As Nav explains, Malta ticks more boxes than anywhere else in Europe when it comes to ease of assimilation for Indians.
