Dominica Launches its New Biometric Passport

The Government of Dominica announced that its new biometric passport would take effect from 19th July 2021. Citizens of Dominica can obtain a biometric passport upon renewing an expired or a lost passport.

Dominica's Citizenship by Investment applicants awaiting the delivery of their passports can continue with the current passports or choose to wait for the biometric passports.

What is a Biometric Passport?

A biometric passport also called an 'e-passport' or a 'digital passport', is a government document that proves the owner's identity and citizenship when travelling abroad. An e-passport looks like an ordinary passport, but the difference is that it has an international biometric symbol at the bottom of the front cover. The biometric passport is embedded with an electronic microprocessor chip containing data about the passport owner.

All the information needed to determine a person's identity is stored on that chip. Information such as passport number, date of issue and expiration date, photo, surname, name, patronymic, date of birth of a person, and other biometric data such as iris recognition and fingerprints, are used to authenticate the identity of the passport holder.

Dominica's efforts to improve the security of the island's borders and its citizens' safety are what brought upon the transition to biometric passports. Using a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) ensures that all personal information is protected from counterfeit and fraud. The biometric passport is read without delay, which allows the holder to pass through customs and border control efficiently.

Dominica Citizenship by Investment

In 1993, the Commonwealth of Dominica launched its Citizenship by Investment programme to empower people worldwide to secure a stable and secure future for themselves and their families through an investment into the island. With a minimum investment of $100,000, investors and their families can receive their new passports in as little as four months. The whole family can acquire second passports, including dependent children under 30 years old and parents of any age.

Citizens of Dominica can take advantage of visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to over 140 countries and territories, including the United Kingdom, EU Schengen Area and Russia. Visa-free access coupled with the new security of the biometric passport proves that Dominica is making significant strides in providing a high quality of life and safety for its citizens.
